At its core, social media for small businesses and nonprofits is about connection. Yes, there may also be goals related to product sales or donations, but it all comes back to connection – and connection demands authenticity.
Authenticity doesn’t mean you have to throw the windows wide open and share all of the hard stuff about your business, but sharing some of the real stuff about your organization helps people connect with you.
Is your social media authentic for your business? Does it show people who you really are?
Here are a few tips for showing up with authenticity on social media.
Know your brand
Being authentic on social media requires knowing – and fully embracing – your brand. We recommend sitting down and personifying your business to really get to the core of who you are as a business and how you want to be perceived. What tone of voice does your organization use? What sort of customer relationship and experience are you trying to create? How do you want people to feel when they read your content?
Start small
Showing up authentically on social media doesn’t have to be a “go big or go home” approach – it’s okay to start small! It could be something as simple as doing a short behind-the-scenes reel or a get-to-know-us post that shows a little more of the human side of your business. Then, once you have some engagement or feedback to look at, you can start to incorporate more personalized content into your strategy.
Don’t overthink it
Yes, it takes time and energy to create and share content. But sometimes it takes more time than it needs to. We are human and also entrepreneurs, so it comes with the territory. Don’t overthink sharing that in-the-moment content that shows the people behind your business. In fact, when you feel called to share something in the moment, embrace the authenticity of it and get it out there!
