Don’t Overlook Word of Mouth Marketing

Digital marketing gets a lot of attention, and for good reason. With our technology-driven world, the internet is the main hub for lots of things these days, including marketing. But there continues to be one other powerful marketing method that sometimes gets overlooked – word of mouth marketing.

The concept of word of mouth marketing is pretty simple – it’s one person telling another person about your product or service. In most cases, it’s going to be someone who has done business with you already, but it could also be someone you’ve met but not worked with previously.

People do business with people they know, like, and trust. What’s better than generating leads and potential new customers through people telling others how amazing you are?

Don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth marketing! While it can happen organically, there are also some things you can do to encourage it.

Put yourself out there

While digital marketing gets a lot of attention, good old fashioned networking is still a powerful way to connect and help people get to know your business. Look into your local chamber of commerce or industry associations to find groups to attend. Join some local networking groups on Facebook and keep an eye out for in-person events.

Being intentional about creating genuine connections with other people goes a long way when it comes to word of mouth marketing. You may not be what a certain person is looking for at the moment, but they may know someone who is looking for you!

Ask your customers to share their experiences

Another great way to promote word-of-mouth marketing is to ask your customers to share your business. This could be as simple as requesting they write a testimonial to use on your website, asking customers to share your social media page, or checking in to see if they know anyone who could benefit from your services and then asking for an introduction.

Stand out from the crowd

There are many ways to stand out from the crowd, but showing up authentically is a good one. Know who you are as a business and embrace it consistently. Another little thing that can help you stand out is sending hand-written notes or thoughtful emails when it comes to certain anniversaries, dates, or just because moments. If it’s within your budget, consider sending holiday gifts or flowers to show your appreciation for supporting your business. Ask yourself, what would make someone else stand out to you?

Encouraging word-of-mouth-marketing doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does take some time and attention to include it as part of your marketing strategy.
